Which forum are you going to use? XenForo or IPBoard? You need to give us information so we can help you.

Here are some I can think of:

XenForo:
Double Post Merge
Donations (If you're going to use donations)
Widget Framework
Chatbox (If you're going to use chatbox - TaigaChat if possible)
BB Codes
Username Change
User Upgrades
XenCore Tools (PRIORITY)

There are plenty more free & paid addons (Unless you get them from a nulled website)

IPBoard (Invision Power Board):
Chatbox
Donations

It all depends what you're trying for. I use IPBoard for a gaming forum because it's 10x better than XenForo, but if you were to use it for a dicussion / social type like Invision-Virus, I would suggest XenForo.

According to me, you do not need to have a large number of plug-ins.
Just ShoutBox statistics and some recent topics and posts.

ShoutBox, it's cool for members to be able to interact outside of topics.
IAwards, great ach too, can organize events in the forum.

Hey there,
To me, I honestly just need a few to last. If you have more than like 7-10 plugins then I feel like members would be cluttered with all these things. Don't get me wrong though, if you have like 7-10 plugins that are all "behind the scenes" kind of things then you're fine, but if they are all design based like member-maps and like website games then I feel like members will be less likely to want to spend more time on your website. But my top 5 favorite addons are bellow.

1. Shoutbox
2. Group Icons (displayed on profile and forums)
3. TS Integration
4. Notification Addon for Chrome
5. Applications

Definitely agree with some of the above suggestions - I use Steam Login, Member Timezone, Country Flags and Shoutbox personally.

Other than that my other suggestions were already named, shoutbox, mass pm, auto welcome and so on

You'll get a different answer from everyone with a question like this. It really depends on what you're shooting for. What I generally do is I sit here and go through everything that's been recently updated, download it and test it with what I already run in a development environment. At the end of the day, if it adds a new feature that can mysteriously make people happy and make my life easier, I want it on my forum. Having used both XenForo and IPB I do agree with certain portions, XenForo is more discussion but IP.Board is better for gaming due to a better selection of third party modification. If you have any coding knowledge, then it doesn't really matter.

My recommendations for IPB, at the very least

• Group Name Indicator (adds a legend to tell you what usergroup is what on the forum index)
  
• Awards (Promotes activity)
  
• Server List (Especially for a gaming community, even if all you have is a TeamSpeak server it's always nice to have your status displayed somewhere)
  
  • There's another plugin floating around called Server Console or something like that, and that's more geared to status checking of things like a VPS/dedicated server etc. Haven't messed with it but I'm sure it could ultimately monitor whatever your heart desires.
• Chatbox
  
• Donations (Or if you don't want to add more shit to your board you can mess with Nexus and setup donations that way )
  
• Anything that's a login handler. I typically stick with what's already included in Community Enhancements as well as Steam/Twitch etc.

Server list and awards are two plugins that I've found really neat on other websites I have used and I am curious as to where I could get possible plugins for such to work with ipb. I still need to wait on my license though and then my friend will set up the basic part of the website for me. I'd be open to any more plugin ideas the community might have though.
