How would you guys go about upgrading your forums? I don't want to do the upgrade in the directory where my main forums are because of downtime and in case anything goes wrong. I am pretty sure if I make a new directory with the same files and make a backup database to use for the upgrade there will be issues due to the forums path. And another issue would be some of the addons being out of date. If anyone has any tips or guides on this that would be AWESOME! Thank you!

Of course you can/may do a backup, but why should you make a new directory, do not understand.
Nothing goes wrong and upgrade takes only about ten minutes (or even less).
If you have a very large database, then everything else will be done in the background and will not interfere with anyone.
